The Legacy of Sidekick: A Canadian Animated Series
Sidekick is a Canadian animated television comedy series created by Todd Kauffman (former co-director of Total Drama) and Joey So. The series first aired in Canada on September 3, 2010, on YTV. In the United States, the series premiered on Cartoon Network on June 1, 2011, at 3:30 PM ET. The show concluded on September 14, 2013, but reruns continued until December 30, 2016. Qubo began airing the series in the US between March 27, 2017, and August 24, 2019.
Set in the fictional town of Splitsboro, the series follows an orphan boy named Eric Needles as he trains to become a sidekick to heroes at the Academy for Aspiring Sidekicks. Alongside his best friend Trevor Troublemeyer and his two female friends, Vana Glama and Kitty Ko, Eric navigates the challenges of hero training while dealing with the harsh realities of being a sidekick in a dangerous world.
Splitsboro is a violent and scary place. Being a sidekick is dangerous. — Ms. Mushpickle (Little Orphan Eric)
Why Was Sidekick Cancelled?
Fans often wonder why the animated television series Sidekick was canceled after just three seasons. While no official reason was given, it’s likely due to declining ratings and shifting priorities within the network. Despite its cancellation, the show remains beloved by fans for its quirky humor and unique take on the superhero genre.
Many viewers also express concern about the constant bullying Eric faces throughout the series. While this aspect adds realism to the portrayal of life as a sidekick, it has sparked discussions about representation and character development in children's media.
