Fire Incident Report
Upon entering the building, fire was discovered in the basement as well as the second-floor ceiling. The East Hampton and Southampton Fire Departments promptly responded to the scene. The hotel, a three-story red brick structure located in the heart of town next to the Sag Harbor Fire Department, does not have a designated parking area for guests. Situated 100 miles east of New York City on the East End of Long Island, Sag Harbor is approximately a two-hour drive from the city.
Building Department Overview
The Building Department manages all aspects of construction-related activities within the village. This includes issuing permits, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with local zoning codes. Property owners can view relevant documents issued by the department online. Any matter requiring clarification regarding the meaning or intent of any provision of the Zoning Code may be referred to the Building Inspector.
Village Offices
The offices of the Village Clerk, Village Treasurer, Building Department, and Fire Marshal are housed in the Village Hall. To apply for a rental permit, property owners must submit a completed application to the Village Building Department. The application should include basic information such as property details and owner contact information.
The role of the building department extends beyond traditional inspection duties. It also involves issuing building permits and overseeing demolition projects. Starting Monday, May 19, 2025, all Building Department applications must be submitted digitally through the OpenGov portal.
Recent Developments
In recent news, Sag Harbor Village Senior Building Inspector Thomas Preiato resigned effective January 8 to accept a similar position with East Hampton Village. Mayor Kathleen Mulcahy announced Mr. Preiato's departure during a meeting on Tuesday. Prior to his resignation, Mr. Preiato had served as the town's chief building inspector on a provisional basis since October of the previous year.
Parking and Construction Regulations
Dock construction in the area requires permits from the Village, along with approvals from Southampton Town or the State Office of General Services, depending on the ownership of underwater land. Building Permits and Inspections
The Building Inspector is responsible for receiving applications and issuing permits for the erection, alteration, removal, and demolition of buildings or structures. According to Chapter 92 of the Village Code, adopted by the Board of Trustees on February 10, 2009, the Building Department adheres to state regulations outlined in § 377 of the Executive Law of the State of New York.
Village of Sag Harbor Code
The Village of Sag Harbor code book is maintained online by the publisher and updated several times a year to reflect new legislation. As of November 12, 2024, the latest updates were included in the code book. The Village Code covers various chapters, including Building Construction (§ 92-1 – § 92-26).
